Month after month, members of the Rotary Club of Georgetown TX help the Texas Ramp Project, a 501(c)3 entity, build accessibility ramps for the housebound members of our community. All of the beneficiary selection, project design, and material procurement is handled by TRP, but the coordination of volunteers is handled by Rotarians. For November, the team was assigned a fairly straightforward ramp project - at least they thought so originally - at a home in Bartlett, located in eastern Williamson County. A dozen hearty souls braved the onset of winter weather and tackled the project with enthusiasm. Notwithstanding some design miscalculations, the project team completed things in roughly four hours. New Rotarian Ed Petrere captured the entire project with timelapse photography, presented here in two minutes! Jim Deuser, a member of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, TX is passionate about peacebuilding. Recently, on behalf of the Club's Racial Unity and Peacebuilding Committee (RUPBC), Jim attended Rotary's Multi-District Training Institute in Pflugerville, TX. RMDTI as it is commonly referred to, is a weekend training and networking seminar for Rotary District Leaders including current and future Governors, District Chairpersons, and leaders from Rotary International. Jim took advantage of the opportunity to showcase the Peace Pole and Peace Garden projects to key leaders across the organization, and attracted quite a positive stir with several invitations to make future presentations in various Districts and help spread peace. The City of Georgetown TX has sponsored the Civic Leaders Academy since 2021. It allows citizens of Georgetown to learn about city government and their elected officials. It provides an immersive education into the daily workings of city government and all the respective departments through monthly four-hour educational sessions over a nine-month period ranging from city finance, to parks and recreation to utilities to downtown development to library services to city management. There is also a session on how the city council functions to guide the city’s future. Each session is headed by a member of the leadership team of Georgetown and provides a window on what it takes to make Georgetown the greatest city to live and work in. The Georgetown TX Rotary Club was fortunate to have two of its members, Todd Smith and Joe Orsak, graduate from this year’s class. Rotarian Tom Paxson graduated from the inaugural class last year. If you are interested in learning more about the city of Georgetown and want to become a member of one of the many city commissions or committees the Civic Leaders Academy is a great place to start. Applications for the next Academy will go live online in August.

Members were also treated with a presentation on Rotary Leadership by PDG Dian Edwards, who covered the many opportunities which exist within the organization. The Rotary Club of Georgetown’s Little Library and bench are being used by residents in the neighborhood around the Getsemani Center in Southeast Georgetown. The photo shows a mom and her children picking out books on Saturday morning, July 1, 2023. Later in the week a neighbor was relaxing on the bench in the shade on her way walking to work. The little library, the bench and a live oak tree were a project under the leadership of PDG Beverly Luedke. ADG Karron Wilson was instrumental in bringing the project into reality.

Georgetown TX Rotary Club members were out in force at Independence Day festivities in San Gabriel park. Rotarians chatted up the curious, informed those interested, and sold dedicatory flags (to be flown at the 2023 Field of Honor(R)) to those in attendance. The annual festivities brought together a wide array of community organizations, and included food and beverage booths, kids activities, and entertainments. However, the highlight of the event was the City of Georgetown's fireworks display, which attracted thousands to the park. As an early reminder, the Field of Honor(R), which normally takes place on the park's athletic field, will not, in 2023, be held at the longtime location due to the extensive park renovations currently underway. For the current year's event, which runs from November 4 - 12, 2023, the Field will relocate for one year only to the Hammerlun Center field at 507 West University Ave.

 Paulette Taylor, President of the Georgetown Citizen Cultural Memorial Association was honored by the Rotary Club of Georgetown, TX with their highest recognition for community service by a non-Rotarian, the Sam Brady Award. Named for one of the club’s founding members, Sam Brady was its first President and also its first recipient of the Paul Harris Fellow recognition in support of The Rotary Foundation. The award was most recently presented (posthumously) to past Georgetown Mayor Leo Wood. Ms. Taylor, born and raised in Georgetown, attended the Carver School until her graduation in 1964. During her “conversation” with Rotarian Dr. Ron Swain (Chairman of the club’s Racial Unity & Peace Building Committee), Ms Taylor told the packed room how at one point there was a chance, due to the possibility of school integration, that she could transfer to Georgetown High School where she could satisfy her desire to take a typing class to prepare her for post-graduation business school. However the prevailing socioeconomic climate precluded the integration idea at the time. Nevertheless, after graduation from Carver Ms. Taylor attended Prairie View A&M where she pursued a Business Education Major and graduated after four years with aspirations of becoming a teacher. She returned to Georgetown while her husband served our country in Viet Nam and former Mayor Jack Frost hired her to teach Special Ed. Ms. Taylor taught at the same school for 31 years until her retirement. During the same luncheon meeting, members of the newly-formed Rotary Interact Club at East View High School were introduced to the Club and received certificates recognizing their completion of the Rotary Positive Peace Academy module that Georgetown Rotarians completed recently. Rotarians serve their local communities with the opportunity to serve global communities. The Sam Brady Award recognizes an individual who exemplifies Rotary’s 4-Way Test (of the things we think say or do) and lives the Rotarian ideal of Service Above Self. A large group of members of the Rotary Club of Georgetown TX attended our District 5870 Conference of Clubs in Corpus Christi. With 57 clubs spread across eleven counties in Central Texas, representatives from all over Central Texas descended upon Corpus Christi for a weekend of fellowship, inspiration, and fun. District Governor Shannon Coleman designed a conference agenda loaded with opportunities for members to get to know one another better in the hope of future collaboration, and provided attendees with plenty of opportunities to get outside their "comfort zones" and engage more fully with others. DG Shannon also shared this short video re-capping the amazing success of her District-wide service project, held in conjunction with her visits to every club in the District.

Members of the Benold Mixed Choir performed before an audience at a regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Georgetown TX. Benold Mixed Choir was founded in 2017 as a top level group in 3 & 4-part harmony. Composed of 7th & 8th graders, these students sing a wide variety of music including a cappella, vocal jazz, pop, broadway and barbershop music. Performing a 4 concert season with Mixed Choir, these students are also enrolled in a second choir class at Benold. Besides Mixed Choir, they are also performing with Tenor-Bass Choir or the Varsity Treble Choir. Every Spring, each of these choirs also competes at the state level in the UIL Concert & Sight Reading evaluation. In March at the UIL competition, the Tenor-Bass Choir earned Division 2 Excellent ratings in Sight Reading and Division 1 Superior ratings in Concert. For our Sopranos & Altos in the Varsity Treble Choir, they earned the Sweepstakes Award! This means that every judge in both the Concert & Sight Reading evaluation gave them Division 1 Superior ratings! Over the past four years Benold Mixed Choir group has competed at the Capitol City Showcase in Cedar Park, earning such recognition as the "Stars to Watch" and "Audience Favorite." This summer, a new quartet of four 8th grade girls known as the "Showstoppers" will head to Dallas to compete in the Sweet Adelines International Rising Star Quartet competition.

This story was written and distributed by the Rotary Club of Wimberley: At this week’s meeting, the Wimblerley Rotary heard from Jim Deuser of the Georgetown Rotary’s Racial Unity & Peacebuilding Committee. The committee first convened in June 2020 following an escalation of racial tensions in the U.S., and has been meeting weekly for almost three years now. It has expanded to include committee members in other parts of the world. They promote the belief that: when people work to create peace in their communities, the change can have a global effect. Jim shared the committee’s mission and vision, and provided guidelines for difficult conversations. One local symbol that has developed are the “peace poles” that can be placed throughout the community. The local Georgetown Rotarians are involved in making sure each of the community’s schools have a Peace Pole area for students.

Last Friday's luncheon meeting of the Rotary Club of Georgetown, TX was highlighted by the visit of our District Governor, Shannon Coleman. DG Shannon participated in multiple member recognitions during the program, as we welcomed new member Brian Harris, son of Past President Tim Harris, into membership. We also learned a lot about two of our recent new members, Joe Orsak and Jerry Huffman who gave their "classification talks" to the members, providing information about their backgrounds and interests. Governor Shannon also presented recognition certificates to a whopping FIFTEEN of our members for achieving their first Paul Harris Fellow awards, to acknowledge their financial support of The Rotary Foundation. DG Shannon took the podium as our featured speaker to give a short presentation about overall Foundation giving and how our members should support contributions to the Annual Fund at this time. With a few matching programs in process, and a very special "Raffle Mania" contest with some terrific prize packages to be awarded at the upcoming District Conference of Clubs, there are many reasons to give...giving that comes back to our District and Club to help cover costs with some of the local projects we choose to do.

The Rotary Club of Georgetown, TX recently installed a contemplative bench and lending library at the Garden of Getsemani Center in Georgetown as part of a District-wide service project. The Getsemani Community Garden grows food for those in need, offers neighbors a place to garden, and provides lessons on how to garden. It is associated with the First United Methodist Church of Georgetown. Led by project leader Larry Baird and a crew of volunteers, the team assembled the steel bench emblazoned with the Rotary logo along with the Lending Library to provide a place of respite and reflection for the community. Georgetown Rotarians are People of Action, and we welcome all who have a desire to serve our community – both locally as well as globally. As part of Rotary International, we are one of approximately 34,000 Clubs in 200 countries globally laser-focused on doing good. | The Rotary Club of Georgetown TX Foundation, sponsors of the Central Texas Field of Honor® at San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, TX recently named the 2022 Beneficiary organizations who will receive proceeds from flag sales during the upcoming Sixth Annual event. The Field of Honor® is an emotional, educational, and stirring tribute to the men and women who have served or are serving to protect our freedoms as first responders or in military service.
Organizers couldn't specify the amount of the potential award to be distributed to each Beneficiary organization but were able to report that over the first five years they distributed over $175,000 to community organizations. Rotary Club Foundation President Nathan Winstead commented “it’s both a pleasure and an honor to partner with these great organizations who share our vision of serving veterans and first responders.”
Chosen from a widespread call for applicants, qualified 501(c)3 organizations went thru an application process followed by live interviews with members of the review Committee. After a lengthy review, the Committee chose three organizations who they felt best represent the three pillars of the Rotary Club of Georgetown TX Field of Honor®: Veterans, First Responders, and Service Above Self.
- Veteran organization O.P. Veteran was chosen as a Beneficiary and, among the many activities it conducts each year, was asked to use the funds to specifically bolster their Garrison retreat program, a weeklong retreat for veterans to share stories, forge friendships, and heal together.
- The second Beneficiary, ROCK (Ride On Center for Kids), will soon be launching a Rock On First Responder program to address certain deficits in the officer’s current training regimen, and funds have been designated to be used for that essential program.
- WilCo Blue Star Mothers is a volunteer service group in Williamson County (TX) that supports other veteran non-profit organizations ranging from volunteerism to fundraising. They also host a Gold Star Mothers luncheon where they bond and share with each other. As the Committee’s third chosen Beneficiary, WilCo Blue Star Mothers demonstrate the importance of service and support to veterans and first responders, and also to numerous ancillary organizations to which they provide manpower and support.
The Field of Honor®, now in its sixth year in its display of over 1,600 full size US Flags, is proud to announce for the first time in Central Texas the “Tunnel To Towers” exhibit, a stirring exhibit in remembrance of the events of 9/11. In addition to school field trips and senior center excursions the event is free and open to the public 24x7 from November 5-12. Opening Ceremonies will be held on November 6, and a Veterans Day Celebration will be on Nov 11. Beneficiary awards are generated from the sale of flags displayed on the field which can be purchased in advance from Community Affiliates or online at http://GeorgetownTXFieldofHonor.org. The Rotary Club of Georgetown set time aside during its weekly meeting last Friday to wipe out weekend hunger for 800 Central Texas school children. Members packed weekend food kits for children who rely on school meals during the week but live in homes that are food insecure. Envisioned by Rotary District 5870 Governor Shannon Coleman of Pflugerville, the district-wide hands-on service project is designed to help feed thousands of children who might otherwise go hungry. Georgetown, TX - Non-Profit organizations serving first responders, active duty military personnel, veterans, law enforcement members and their families are encouraged to complete a request for consideration to be named a Beneficiary of the 2022 Field of Honor® (FOH). In 2021 Major Beneficiaries included the Birdwell Foundation, Chris Kelly Foundation, Dilworth Chapter of the MOWW, and Heroes Night Out. A Beneficiary recipient must wait one year before they may reapply. Example: Beneficiaries that received an award from the 2021 FOH cannot receive Beneficiary awards from the 2022 FOH. FOH is only accepting online applications, which may be accessed here. For consideration, organizations must be a 501(c)3 in good standing and submit their completed Form 990 via email to gtfieldofhonor@gmail.com along with their application. Those not required to file a 990 should provide their 501(c)3 approval letter and a letter of explanation as to why their 990 filing is not required. Applications will be accepted through Friday, July 29th at 5pm. Requests without complete documentation will not be considered. Qualified applicants will be contacted for a short interview by members of the committee by mid-July. The Sixth Annual Field of Honor® is scheduled for November 5th-12th 2022 at San Gabriel Park in Georgetown, TX and funds from flag sales will be distributed to Beneficiaries during the first quarter of 2023.

On October 25th, one of the supporters of the Field of Honor, John Montgomery (Owner of Roberts Printing), visited the Georgetown Rotary Club to exemplify "Service Above Self,” Through his Georgetown Poker Club @GTPOKER he donated the proceeds from a poker tournament to purchase flags for veterans to be displayed at the Field of Honor. He is shown presenting a check to Jeanne Cox and George Lourigan in the amount of $1,025. We thank John for his continued support of the Georgetown Club activities.

On September 6th, Jim Henry, the District Governor for District 5870 visited the Georgetown Rotary Club. After providing the members with an update of District activities and goals, he challenged the membership with three questions. 1. What is your passion as a Rotarian? 2. Why is that your passion? 3. What are you going to do about it? The answer to these questions is the difference maker as to whether or not you are a true Rotarian. Jim was joined by an entourage that included DG Elect and DG Nominee, the Assistant DG and the enthusiastic Rich Kaye, the intrepid leader of the Rotary Foundation fundraising efforts. This visit is part of the annual "rite of passage" that has the DG visit all of the clubs in his area.

Fellow Rotarians, I am inspired by the collective work of the all of the volunteers, sponsors, and players that came out to support the great cause of supporting Early Act First Knight this year. On March 22nd, the Rotary Club of Georgetown was visited by three members of the VFW Post 8587, led by Ray Sanchez. A check was presented by Dave Kellerman and Jeanne McClellan to recognize their continuing support for our annual Field of Honor event. The VFW Post generously donates the use of their local hall where we assemble the flags for our Field. They are also represented by members of the Post that join us in the assembly process. Our club is most appreciative of their ongoing support of this special commemorative project.

Our club was recently blessed with a visit from Katelyn Illig, who was a recent delegate representing her local school at the Montessori Model United Nations program. She was joined by her grandparents and her father and her proud grandfather introduced her to the Rotary audience. Just eleven years old, she amazed us with a presentation about her recent trip to the UN in New York, where she spoke to the international MMUN delegates in the main assembly hall. Not only is she a professional and gifted speaker, she is truly poised to be a leader in the future. Her special interest in math and science bodes well for positioning her for a successful career, perhaps as a scientist or a United Nations Delegate. Her description of the delegate "consensus" process helped us understand that there truly is a common ground for us to get along in our world. It will be exciting to follow her progress and contributions to our future.

LMarch 9th was a special day for our Rotary ramp building crew. We had the opportunity to provide a new ramp for a Gold Star Mother, Brittany Forbes. Her new fiancée Gabriel has three children that face their own health challenges. It is fair to say that Brittany deals with daily issues that most of us do not have to confront so it is important that we are able to build the new ramp for their use. As always, the crew was led by George Lourigan and Larry Baird. Along with newcomer Terry Folkerts, we thank Cris Cash, Glenn Beck, Henry Yu, Mike Sweeney, David Kellerman, Barry Bowden and Denis Pepin for their support of this program. This building effort is the continuation of our Rotary Club commitment to the Texas Ramp Project...to build a ramp monthly for someone in need. Very soon, we will build our fiftieth ramp.

On February 8th, our local Georgetown Rotary Club was the victim of a "full-on" frontal attack from Jim Comer, a noted communications consultant. His dynamic approach to teaching us how to "Harness the Power of Authenticity to Connect" was enthusiastically received by all attendees. He makes it clear that effective communication is critical to advancing your goals. He provided anecdotal tips as to how to conquer the fear of public speaking. Start by "being yourself" and introducing your initial audience connection with a story. A key element was the use of "eye contact", ensuring that you are engaging your audience. Effective use of hands and movement around the setting ensures an entertaining delivery. And a smile always helps! Jim has spent over thirty years as a coach and workshop leader, working with corporations, associations and professionals from a myriad of industries. His enthusiastic delivery is a treat to behold.

On December 7, 2018, Hector Martinez of the Rotary Club of Georgetown presented a check to Maureen Kinald, Chair of the Lions KidSight Program. This donation will cover the cost of one of the digital scanners that they use to screen young children. Their mission is to ensure early eye screenings to detect vision problems before they become untreatable. Since 2014, the Lions of District 2-S3 have screened over 50,000 children in our local communities.

On November 30th, 2018, Georgetown Rotary Club Member Barbara Garland presented her husband Ron with a special acknowledgement from the International Fellowship of Scouting Rotarians. He received the Cliff Dochterman Community Service Award. It is offered in recognition of the many contributions Ron has made to the furtherance of the ideals of "Service Above Self" and exemplifying the principles of the "Four-Way Test" in our community and Club. On November 3rd, 2018, in the midst of frenzied activity to set up the Georgetown Rotary Field of Honor, a small group of Rotarians and friends travelled to rural Granger to complete a special build for the uncle of Myra Page. The build took over five hours and George Lourigan, Larry Baird, Henry Yu and Denis Pepin were ably assisted by Myra and relatives John Valenta and Freddie Camp. Rudy Bohac is eighty-four years old and is wheelchair bound. His desire to regain his independence had him spend the last year in a nursing home, improving his health. This ramp will allow him to return home. Because of his failing health, he will be visited daily by Home Health workers. This is the forty-fourth ramp build by the Georgetown Rotary Club, under the auspices of the Texas Ramp Project.

It was a special day on October 19th when were able to induct three new members in the Georgetown Rotary Club. With the addition of Lisa Grant, Amanda Scavo and Miranda Bradley, the club was able to add considerable talent to support our activities. Actually, before the induction, all three of them became engaged in various club projects. The new members were inducted by Membership Chair Dave Maserang, along with their sponsors Roger Chappell (Miranda), Georgianne Hewitt (Lisa) and Marissa Austin (Amanda).

On October 13th, volunteers from our Georgetown Rotary Club visited Leander, Texas to build its 43rd ramp. Mrs. Ellen Munroe was the beneficiary of this new build. She recently lost her husband who had the specific need but the club agreed to proceed with the project as Mrs. Munroe has the continuing need for such a ramp. She asked us to thank all of those involved in the build. The Club was ably assisted by members and parents of the Interact Clubs from Forbes Middle School and the Benold Middle School. This was the second build for a number of the students and they are becoming skilled at many of the aspects of ramp building. The Club thanks them for their participation. The Club has been working with the Texas Ramp Project for a number of years, providing ramps for those with special needs disabilities. #serviceaboveself #1districtstrong

On October 13th, 2018, our own Rotarian Dr. Gonzalo Garza will be awarded the Congressional Veterans Commendation for his exemplary military and community service throughout his lifetime. He will be honored at Texas A&M in Killeen, along with a handful of other recipients of this prestigious award. After serving tours of duty in both WWII and the Korean war, and receiving the Bronze Star and Purple Heart among many military awards, he went on to complete his schooling and pursued a career in education. He served as Superintendent in many Texas School Districts, and retired in 1992 from the Austin ISD. His tireless efforts to work with programs that aided Hispanic and African-American children to "rise above" earned him many accolades. He was recognized by the Austin ISD by naming The Gonzalo Garza Independence High School in his honor. In 2018, the Austin ISD awarded him the first Hispanic Lifetime Achievement Award, which will be given in his name every year henceforth.

On September 14, 2018, District Governor Jerry Chapman visited our club as part of his journey to the clubs of District 5870 #1DistrictStrong. He delivered an inspiring message, one aimed at reminding us as to why we belong to this global organization dedicated to Service Above Self. He was particularly outspoken about his special connection to our Polio Plus campaign and the value of our contributions to the Paul Harris Foundation. Member engagement (sometimes extending to non-members) was a key element of his delivery. It is important that we all take the responsibility of ensuring that our new members become immediately immersed in club activities. He became fully engaged when he inducted the newest member of our club, Janelle McNeill. Finally, he asked us to "save the date" for the special visit of our International President Barry Rassin, on February 2, 2019...His "Be the Inspiration" theme for our Rotary year should remind us all of our commitment to the Rotary organization. #georgetownrotary

We had a great ramp build Saturday, Sept 8, in Pflugerville. On August 31st, the Rotary Club of Georgetown honored Korin Hardt with a Paul Harris Fellow. Korin is a grade 6 science teacher at Forbes Middle School and provides the leadership for a very successful Interact Club at the school. At a time when we did not have someone to head up this endeavor, Korin stepped up and she now is the leader of forty (40) members. This Interact club is very active, having done everything from planting trees and building ramps to running coat and canned food drives. Volunteering at the animal shelter and making cat toys for shelter inhabitants is also part of their activities. In bestowing this Paul Harris Fellow, we recognize the special efforts made by Korin in bringing new vitality and energy to this club.

On August 17, 2018, the Rotary Club of Georgetown was the recipient of a check for $50,000 from the Don Hewlett Chevrolet Buick dealership. They are a proud sponsor of many school programs, community events and non-profit organizations around Central Texas. This donation continues their gracious support of the many charitable activities undertaken by the Georgetown Rotary Club. Over many years, the club has received in excess of $150,000, including this recent donation. These funds are used to support the Rotary Clubs local youth, education, veteran and first responder programs along with supporting international service activities. In addition, this donation will assist in funding special events like Field of Honor, Patriots Ball and the annual Golf Invitational.

The latest build for our club #gtxrotary was a little different! On July 14th and after a long drive literally into the boondocks of Coupland, TX (encountering fields of burros and cattle accompanied by cattle egrets), we first had to demolish an old ramp (Cris Cash has the wasp stings to attest to that activity) and then build the new ramp. George brought a trailer onto which we loaded the debris from the old ramp. Due to the length of the "demo" and reconstruction, we were only able to complete the ramp without the handrails. Another crew is scheduled to complete that activity this week. Attendees were our intrepid leader George Lourigan, Cris Cash, Dave Kellerman, Stuart Garner, Denis Pepin and Amber Kurkowski and her family, husband Chuck and their ever helpful girls (Norma and Beverly, I think). This was our 41st build under the auspices of the Texas Ramp Project.

On July 7th, an intrepid gang of trainer/mentors from our Rotary Club #gtxrotary again traveled to Copperas Cove to assist their local Rotary Club in building their second ramp. A significant change to the original design was needed to ensure that the ramp incline was compliant...the original design would have created too steep of a ramp. A special threshold was also built to accommodate the ease of moving a wheelchair out the front door. Club members in attendance were Larry Baird, George Lourigan, Cris Cash, Bill Conner, Mike Sweeney and Denis Pepin. This project was in addition to the forty ramps that our Georgetown Club has built under the auspices of the Texas Ramp Project!

Several of our Georgetown Rotary members accompanied the Copperas Cove Rotary club in the construction of a handicapped ramp for Mrs Rosa Travis in Copperas Cove on July 8. The purpose of this build was to train the CC Rotary club in the techniques of building a ramp for The Texas Ramp Project. The CC Rotary Club has expressed an interest in forming a Texas Ramp Build team for Coryell county.
Those Georgetown Rotary members participating included Cris Cash, Bill Connor, Denis Pepin, George Lourigan, Mike Sweeney and Larry Baird.
Fun was had by all as members of both clubs worked together and enjoyed the fellowship.

On July 2nd, a team of #gtxrotary members travelled to the RYLA camp in Bastrop to prepare and serve dinner to the student attendees and counselors. Fajitas (and fixings) and red velvet cake was enjoyed by all! This weeklong event is to help prepare young people for leadership roles in the future. The attendees are selected from schools around our district and are sponsored by our Rotary clubs #district1strong. The Rotarians in attendance were Larry Bingham (Grill Master), Karron Wilson, Vanessa Red, Myra Page, Jeanette Herrington, Wilson Morris, Dave Fendrick and Denis Pepin.

In the annual rite of passage, on June 29th, the #georgetownrotary witnessed the induction of the new officers, directors and committee chairs for the Rotary year commencing July 1st. After the gavel was passed by President Cris Cash, incoming President Karron Wilson presented the new group with appropriate name and position badges. Our now Past President Cris Cash was roundly applauded for his contribution in the past year and was presented with a gavel plaque to recognize his commitment to our club.

On June 16th, three members of our Georgetown Rotary Club travelled to Copperas Cove to assist the local Rotary Club in building their first ramp, under the auspices of the Texas Ramp Project. George Lourigan, Dave Kellerman and Denis Pepin provided training for the members of the local club in attendance. Additional guidance was offered by an executive from the Texas Ramp Project.
The Copperas Club has several Ramp builds planned for the future and our Georgetown Club will offer additional training assistance at their next build on July 7th.

On Saturday June 2nd, the Georgetown Rotary Ramp Build team constructed a ramp for Mr. Magdaleno Serrato of Liberty Hill. Mr. Serrato, who is elderly had a heart attack and stroke and is currently dealing with Parkinson's Disease and Dementia. Most recently, he fell and broke his hip. It will require him to use a wheel chair for an indefinite period of time. The ramp built will enable Mr. Serrato to safely leave his home as well provide a small deck that will allow him to safely enjoy the comfort of the outdoors. This is the 40th handicapped ramp the Georgetown Rotary Build team has constructed for the Texas Ramp project. This event was part of a Ramp Build Blitz that saw seventeen (17) ramps built by various organizations in a five (5) county area on June 2, 2018.

On June 25th, the Rotary Club of Georgetown was pleased to host the Executive Director of PACT (Partners Against Child Trafficking) and an amazing Student Ambassador, Sophie Buechler. Their critical message was to create an awareness of the massive nature of a criminal issue in our state...sex trafficking! Sophie provided a viewpoint from a thirteen year old perspective, learned from diligent research into the depth of the problem. She disclosed that Texas is number two in the nation (involving almost 80,000 children), a shocking glimpse into the stark reality and pervasiveness of the issue. They provided important information as to how to know the signs of trafficking and how to deal with them. PACT is a leading authority and advocacy organization that trains our youth and adults to DETECT, DEFEND and DISRUPT the demand in child trafficking.

The Georgetown Rotary Club once again has honored scholarship students from East View High School, Georgetown High School and Richarte High School.
Presented annually, the Club offers $20,000 to graduating seniors in scholarship monies. The $1,000 increments are awarded to the Georgetown Independent School District graduating seniors of East View High School, Georgetown High School and Richarte High School, based on application review and selection by a Rotary Committee.

In a long overdue visit, Patrick Harrison and Amber Scarborough from our #1DistrictStrong Public Image Team joined us for our #GeorgetownRotary April 27th meeting and provided an overview of the significant elements of club public relations. They covered topics from Rotary branding to "Why Rotary" and some actual pointers on dealing with FaceBook. The presentation was a "snippet" of the extended Public Image training sessions they offer during the year, sessions that are open to all members and that have value at the club level and outside the club for member businesses.

In a departure from its normal ramp building activities, members of the Georgetown Rotary Club met in Bartlett, TX on March 18, 2018 to build a special clothes donation drop box for a local charity. The “shed” will accommodate the receipt of clothing meant for distribution to needy area residents by the Clothes Closet. Members attending were Myra Page, Cris Cash, Larry Baird, Glenn Beck, Larry Bingham, Stuart Garner, Henry Yu, Ron Garland and Denis Pepin. We were also joined by Doug Love, a team member from Texas Ramps. We were graciously greeted by Joyce and daughter Becky who manage the Clothes Closet.

Mission challenge: RI President Ian Riseley challenged each Rotarian in each district WORLDWIDE to plant one tree for each member during this Rotary year. For the Georgetown Rotary, that challenge would be at least 127 trees. As expected, our club rose to the challenge and well exceeded expectations – in fact, we have nearly doubled that so far! With help from the Sunrise Club, Rotaract, Interact and American Heritage Girls the Georgetown Rotary club has thus far been able to plant trees at Berry Springs Park and Preserve, Southwestern University, 3 Williamson County schools and various businesses and homes throughout the county. As of February 20th our club has planted or pledged to plant over 240 trees with a value of over $6,000 (tree average price of $26.00 for 4-8 foot trees)! Our first group planting was completed on the 10th at Berry Springs Park and Preserve. Over 36 volunteers of all ages withstood the near freezing temperatures to plant 27 trees in conjunction with the Preserves conservation development plan. We will have more group plantings to be announced and would encourage anyone interested in participating to contact our Arbor Day Coordinator, Denise White to be placed on our volunteer list.

It was January 27th, 2018, on a dank and misty morning, when a band of intrepid warriors from the Georgetown Rotary Club emerged from the fog to complete their thirty-eighth ramp build in Jarrell, TX. Under the guidance of George Lourigan and Larry Baird, the group included veterans Bill Connor, Jim Deuser, Stuart Garner, Dan Bradley, Cris Cash and almost fully trained Denis Pepin and newbie Henry Yu.
These ramps accommodate the special needs of people that would otherwise be confined to their homes.
This club initiative is part of the Texas Ramp Project, an effort that has built in excess of two hundred ramps, ably coordinated by Larry Baird. Our club is committed to the regular monthly construction of such ramps.

The Rotary Club of Georgetown donates $5,000 to the Caring Place
The Rotary Club of Georgetown is excited to announce the donation of $5,000 to the Caring Place for the purchase of a walk-in refrigerator.
Through its Food Pantry program, The Caring Place provides a seven day supply of emergency food to eligible individuals and families (about 30 lbs. of food per person) once a month. This supply of food, until recently, has primarily been composed of a variety non-perishable food items. However, over the past year, the need to store perishable items has become an increasing critical need of The Caring Place. Not only have fresh food donations from community gardens increased, but through a new partnership with the Georgetown Walmart, The Caring Place receives large quantities of perishable items twice a week. Through the Rotary Club of Georgetown’s donation, the new walk-in refrigerator will allow The Caring Place to store these fresh produce and other perishable items so that more individuals and families have access to these items that are part of a healthy diet
In 2014, The Caring Place distributed 501,720 pounds of food to 16,724 individuals through its Food Pantry program, a 30% increase from the previous year. The Caring Place expects the number of people they serve through the program to continue to grow in 2015. The walk-in refrigerator will have a significant impact on The Caring Place’s ability to serve those in need.

Tim Harris was inducted into the District 5870 Roll of Fame recently. He
becomes only the 13th member from our club to receive this honor.
The District 5870 Roll of Fame was formally established by Continuing
Resolution Number 6 promulgated during the District’s 1957-1958 Rotary
year and most recently amended in 2005. Induction into the Roll of Fame
is the highest award conferred by District 5870 and is intended to recognize
those Rotarians who have distinguished themselves by outstanding service to
their clubs, communities, and District 5870.
Each honoree must be nominated by the President of his or her Club, be
supported by a completed Nomination Form setting forth the nominee’s
contributions to the furtherance of Rotary, its principles, and its programs,
and each nominee must meet, at a minimum, the criteria for selection to
membership in the Roll of Fame set forth in District 5870’s Continuing
Resolution # 6, as amended in 2005.

Congratulation for another record accomplishment. 72 new Benefactors so far this year which is unprecedented!! Leadership 101 “what gets done is what leaders pay attention to.” And it’s most obvious that you are paying attention to everything.
RC of Georgetown has 19 new Benefactors and Lakeway/Lake Travis has 20. And the Killeen Evening Club as earned the very rare distinction of 100% Benefactor Club! And more than 1/3 of our clubs have made a commitment to the Permanent Fund since July.
Would also like to recognize David Hall, Rotary International Major Gifts Officer who also serves as our District’s Permanent Fund Chair. With his help and the support of so many very generous Rotarians in the District our commitment so far this year to The Rotary Foundation’s Permanent Fund exceeds $600,000!! . Fantastic Job, and a very special thank you to all of our Benefactors, Bequest Society Members and Permanent Fund Cash Donors, because the Permanent Fund is the guarantee for The Foundation’s future.

Auction Update
Your auction committee is hard at work to make
this year's auction a great one, but in order for the auction to be successful,
we need your help too. If each member would do the following three things, we
can have the best auction ever.
1.
Sign up to purchase
two bottles of wine. Sign-ups will be on the tables on Friday. Or you can bring
a bottle of Bogle Cabernet, and a bottle of Bogle Chardonnay. If all our wine is donated, we can save on
expenses, and more money will be available for our projects.
2.
Buy an ad in the
catalog to showcase your business. A business card ad is $25; a half-page ad is
$50; and a full page ad is $100. At these prices, you get a real bargain. A
form will be on the tables on Friday.
3.
Procure an item for
the auction. Many of you have vendors, friends, and contacts who would be glad
to donate an item. Please ask. No one will donate if they are not asked. Donate
something yourself. Several members have purchased items or have offered
dinners or services that will be great items for the auction. Procurement forms
will be on your table on Friday. To date, we have 38
items, not nearly enough to raise our goal. Please check the posters
hanging by the kitchen door for updates on procured items.

CHISHOLM TRAILS DAY
Club members are encouraged to support the Chisholm Trails Day event on Saturday, October 20 by purchasing tickets to the community bbq on Saturday night and/or volunteering to assist with the activities of the day at San Gabriel Park. We need 8-10 persons to volunteer a couple of hours helping with the children's horse shoe pits or the lasso event.

SURESH PAHWA, Ph.D., DISTRICT GOVERNOR 2011-2012
As we near the end of this Rotary year, it is time to look back and review the year as we see it. All of us should be pleased with the accomplishments.
Our clubs added EarlyAct First Knight programs in a number of schools in our District, and chartered new Interact clubs. During this year, our District received first ever (in our district) Public Relations grant and we had a successful media campaign. We had a district-wide blood and organ donation drive and hopefully these will continue during the coming years. We implemented a Rotary leadership development program, and completed a strategic plan.
The clubs and the Rotarians around the District showed our commitment to the mission of the Rotary Foundation - doing good in the world. Every club in the District set a goal for Annual Programs Fund (APF) and every club has contributed to APF, first time in our District. Our clubs set a new record for District Assistance Program (DAP) grants at approximately $41,000 towards community service projects valued in excess of $80,000. We reached a new high for contributing the District Designated Fund (DDF) greater than $124,000 towards international humanitarian grants resulting in total grants of $657,000.
The Rotary International President, Kalyan Banerjee, visited our Foundation banquet in February and gave a very inspiring speech. It was a memorable event and was well attended.
The best part of the year for Brigitte and me was visiting the clubs around the District. We are proud of our clubs and their commitment to Rotary core values and helping less fortunate in the world. We want to thank each and every one of our clubs for their hospitality and their affection. We have made many new friends and we will cherish the friendships forever.

The ramp build sponsored by Texas Ramp Project as a step toward expanded service to needs in Williamson County
took place last weekend on Saturday, June
2nd, with the help of a great “hands on” team.
Eight of our members teamed to build a wheel
chair ramp for a person heretofore confined to
her home. Thanks to members Larry Baird,
Larry Bingham, Cris Cash Bill Connors,
Gene Davenport, Myra Page, Ken Poteete,
and Erich Prinz the ramp was created and
assembled in 1/2 day. This “Service Above
Self” project will help an elderly grandmother
enjoy an enhanced quality of life. Thanks
guys, and gal. Your community service is
appreciated. Consideration is being given
to an on going relationship with the Texas
Ramp Project in Williamson County. If you
have interest in projects like this, please let
it be known.

Saturday, June 2, found seven Rotarians at a Work Day for WC4C (Williamson County Community Coordinated
Child Care), working on the new Playground. Our Rotary Club has helped to fund this great project.
Billy Ray Stubblefield, Gary Zreet, Stuart Garner, Ryan Eckert, Ed Trice, Mark Dietz, and Ron Garland used hammers,
wheelbarrows, shovels, rakes, paint brushes and rollers, and muscle, to build fence, paint sandboxes, paint tables, dig
irrigation trenches, move dirt and mulch, and more. Congrats to these Rotarians. We were joined by members of the
Evening Lions Club and other volunteers for a total of 18 valuable helpers.

Two of our own were recognized last weekend at the District 5870 Conference for their outstanding service and commitment to Rotary.
Ron Garland was selected to the 2012 D5870 Roll of Fame and George Lourigan received the Foundation Service Award.
Induction into the Roll of Fame is the highest award conferred by District 5870 and is intended to recognize those Rotarians who have distinguished themselves by outstanding service to their clubs, communities, and District 5870. The qualifications include having been a Rotarian in one (1) or more clubs for five (5) years; serving as an officer or director; maintaining an 80% or better attendance record; attendance at one or more Rotary clubs other than the club of the honoree; attendance at not less than two District Conferences and not less than two District Assemblies; chaired or served on more than one committee or subcommittee in more than one (1) of the four avenues of service; and above all else, outstanding service to Rotary.
The Foundation Service Award is a Rotary International award given by the District Governor for service above self rendered in promoting donor support for the RI Foundation and like support for Foundation programs funded by the Foundation. The Governor also looks at service rendered at the District level in terms of supporting Foundation training and the Foundation Banquet.
Congratulations to both Ron and George for their awards! Thank you both for your hard work and support of Rotary.

50th Anniversary Celebration
Much planning is being done for the April 20 celebration of our 50th year anniversary. Members, please look at your calendars now and determine if you will be able to be present on that day during our extended regular meeting (12:00-1:30 p.m.). We will need to for you to register no later than April 1, and we also need to know if you wish to bring a guest. Why register for a regular meeting, you are thinking!! Here's why. We will be limited to space for 192 persons on this day. There are appx 60 invited special/honored guests that could be present that day. Thus, if all of our members (appx 115) attend, there will be limited seating for member guests. So, we need to start counting heads ('_'). It is our hope that everyone who can be in attendance will be present for this grand occasion. You will be asked to start signing up soon.
As you plan, you are reminded that we will have an extra special buffet luncheon menu created by Alycia and Larry Bingham. The board has approved a $15 charge for this meal (an added $5 for members over the usual $10) for any guests that you might bring on this date. Rumor has it that the meal will be Medallions of Beef with Shrimp en Brochette.
What a great time we can have at the Auction on April 13 and this Celebration on April 20. Please get geared up for attendance at both and let's CELEBRATE 50 years of Service Above Self!! These are occasions that you will not want to miss. Thanks, Gene Davenport

Kalyan Banerjee, International President of Rotary International, will be in Austin on February 11, 2012, as the keynote speaker of local District 5870’s annual Foundation Dinner. Banerjee and his wife Binota live in Vapi, Gujarat, India, where he is chair of United Phosphorus, one of the largest manufacturers of agrochemicals in India.

Although it seems far away, the auction on April 13 will be here before you know it. For the auction to reach its goals, we need each and every member to participate in some way. This year we are trying to sell sponsorships, reserved tables, catalog ads, and Silver Tickets AND we want the best auction items we can find. Each Rotarian can contribute something – whether buying a reserved table and filling it with friends who will bid, asking your business to become a sponsor, contributing an item or money for an item, or buying an ad or a Silver Ticket - each one of us can have a part in making the auction a success. Grand Opening of The Nest, 2308 Old Airport Road, serving GISD high Schools. The Rotary Club of Georgetown presented The Georgetown Project with a $35,000 Rotary Humanitarian Matching Grant, supported by its partner club in Ciudad Victoria, the capital city of Tamaulipas, Mexico. The funds are to support The Nest, The Georgetown Project’s newest initiative, an after-school shelter providing supportive services to homeless teens in 9th - 12th grades attending all three Georgetown ISD high schools. The grant supports furnishings, computers, supplies and other costs associated with creating this new and valuable service for youth in our community.

While you are focused on the season of giving, don’t forget Rotary and our upcoming auction. We have approximately 115 members, and the objective is for every Rotarian to participate by joining a team and helping to put together a Grand Auction Package. Be creative – work as a team to put together a truly grand package. Team members can give cash to help purchase the grand items or purchase smaller gifts that will make up the bigger package. You can even ask non-Rotarians to help.
Don’t forget that the auction pays for over half of all the projects we are able to do each year – from DAP grants, to international grants, to scholarships for our local seniors. In this season of giving, please give your help to making out 2012 auction the best ever.

Club President Laura Antoine has approved a committee to coordinate planning for the 50th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Georgetown. Our club was chartered on April 23, 1962, so our celebration will be conducted at the April 20 meeting in 2012. Committee members are Rebecca Burgman, Myra Page, Laura Tilrico, Roland Pena, Billy Ray Stubblefield, and Gene Davenport. Please share celebration ideas with members of this group. Update: The current Humanitarian Matching Grant supported by our partner club in Ciudad Victoria amounts to $35,000 and is relegated to the community initiative to provide hope for homeless teens in Georgetown. The funds will be used to support creation of a transition center, recently purchased by The Georgetown Projec--with plans to open on August 22, when school begins. Funds are budgeted as follows:
$12,000 Interim (12 months) funding for facility costs
$6,000 Clothes, supplies, and amenities for appx 75 teens
$2,000 Kitchen utensils, supplies, and basic food/snacks for beginning of project
$2,000 Promotional and recruitment materials
$4,000 Computers and printers for study center
$9,000 Furniture and equipment for kitchen, living areas, study center, etc.
$35,000 Total
