Dear Rotarians,

As some of you know, I’ve been spending most of my weekends packing up and cleaning out my childhood home near the Gulf Coast. My parents moved into our home two weeks before I was born. Even though much of the furniture and belongings have been removed and there is a hollowness to the rooms, I’ve noticed that I still sleep more soundly in that house than almost anywhere else. I credit my deep, peaceful sleep to growing up in a home where I felt safe and secure.

Our program this week gives us a chance to hear about the importance of a bed and how it helps provide the physical, emotional, and mental support children need. I invite you to join me in welcoming our speaker Ron Shelly and thanking him and others for the work they are doing to create a sense of safety and security for area children.

I have a couple of asks for this week:
  • Attached to this Weekly Rotary Update is a sign-up for golf teams for our Invitational Golf Tournament, scheduled for Friday, May 28, 2021, at Cowan Creek Golf Course & Pavilion. This is one of our major fundraisers, the proceeds from which enable us to support local grants, service projects and youth programs. It is not too early to start talking to your friends and colleagues about participating in this fun event and inviting them to sign-up.

  • Depending on the conditions in our County, we may be able to return to hybrid meetings in the coming weeks. Please read our weekly updates and watch for any announcements about meetings. We will continue to offer a virtual meeting option even if we add an in-person option.
If you tried to attend the Virtual Rotary Social on Tuesday, you know there was a technical glitch. The social has been rescheduled for this evening Thursday, February 11, from 5:30-7:00pm. Enjoy photos of New Orleans house floats and New Orleans trivia. Be prepared with your Mardi Gras or New Orleans stories ... or just to talk about what you're drinking. Guests are welcome. Find the link in the email sent out by Allison McKee.

Build in the Bog
On a cold and blustery morning in January, a group of dedicated Rotarians and friends visited Pflugerville to build a much needed ramp for a disabled person.  Overnight rains and dog deposits made the effort a little more challenging.  By noon, a fifty-two foot ramp was completed.

The Georgetown Rotarians of George Lourigan, Larry Baird, Cris Cash, Glenn Beck, Henry Yu and Denis Pepin were joined by new helpers Tim and his son Jack (old military friend of George) and Pete and Mickey (neighborhood friends of Denis).  It was nice to have newbies fit right in and make meaningful contributions to our build...many thanks for their participation.

The build was part of the continuing programs of Texas Ramp Project that provides custom built ramps for those with special needs.  The Georgetown Rotary Club is committed to a monthly build program.

CHALLENGING RAMP BUILD
Posted by Denis Pepin on Oct 27, 2019
On Saturday, October 26th, an intrepid band of Georgetown Rotarians and Interact members tackled a very challenging ramp build for Kathy, whose access to and from her home was hindered by the lack of a suitable ramp.

The site required a “custom design” caused by narrow passages and awkwardly placed support posts.  The challenges were all met in what turned out to be a six hour operation.

We are thankful for the efforts of Interact members Elizabeth, Emily , Jacob and Caleb and Rotarians led by George Lourigan and Cris Cash.  Significant engineering efforts were also provided by Glenn Beck, Alan Johnson, Barry Bowden and Denis Pepin.

The builds are part of the ongoing efforts by Texas Ramp Project to provide ramps for disadvantaged people.  The Georgetown Rotary Club has built over 65 ramps to date.
